»Into the Wall« is an urban reintegration of a World War II bunker. The architectural concept revolves around experiencing the thick protective walls of a wartimes building, meanwhile transforming the bunker into a memorial. lt’s utilization concept is designed as a cultural center and social meeting place.
The bunkers atmosphere is determined by a consistent cut through the solid walls of the building. Within the cut, i.e. »Into the Wall«, there is a public pathway which revolves around the inner space, leads over the roof and crosses through the interior of the building as a glass tunnel. The interior spaces of the building are determined by the pathways placement. They appear to insert themselves over one another into the interior of the building from the two long sides of the bunker.
The bunkers utilization on the ground floor revolves around the multinational restaurant reflecting the ethnicities present in this part of the city. The restaurants ceiling forms a gallery equipped with further seating. The foyer is spacious and open, offering space for temporary exhibitions and from the seating steps one can follow the occasional lectures and presentations. In the upper part of the building there is space for a two-storey apartment and a cooking school which provides educational training courses for city residents.
